Keeping well maintained, roadworthy tyres is your legal responsibility. As your tyres are the only thing between your car and the road, high-quality tyres with plenty of tread are vital to your handling, road-safety and performance.
Knowing when to replace your car's tyres could save you from getting unnecessary points on your licence and a fine. It could also save your life.
Legally, your tyres need at least 1.6 millimetres across the central 3/4 of the tread around the circumference of the tyre. We'd recommend that you don't let your tyres wear down this far and almost all tyre manufacturers suggest replacing your tyres at a tread depth of 3mm.
Braking tests show that tyres with a 1.6mm tread depth take an additional 8 metres to stop in wet conditions from a speed of 50mph compared to tests done with tyres that have 3mm tread depth.
DID YOU KNOW? You can receive three penalty points and up to a £2500 fine for EACH TYRE that is illegal.
